Description

General view of the exterior from the west, at the edge of Central Park
[New addition made in 1992 by Gwathmey Siegel and Associates, Architects.] The spiral first appeared in Wright's work as a motor car ramp leading to a mountain-top planetarium overlook (1925
unexecuted) but did not appear again until the first designs for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (1943), New York, resulting in the extraordinary (and functionally controversial) upwardly expanding helix of the main gallery (built 1956-1959).
